Manage stress before it manages you

Stress is not a bad thing by itself. In fact, if there was no stress at all, one would probably get bored and in the frustration that follows, seek out some challenges. We call the productive good stress "Eustress."

When we say "Stress Management," we are talking about the Bad Stress, the kind that gets one blood pressure up, makes one feel miserable and doubting one's own capabilities.

What stresses YOU?

There are different kinds of stressors, and each of us react to them differently.
We all go through many of these stresses, and may be better at handling some rather than others.
Someone with exceptional time management skills, for example, may not feel the time stress but might stressed about asking someone on a date, for example.

How do you manage stress?

Managing stress is more than learning to relax. Knowing what stresses you out can help you develop the tools you need to manage it better.

Stress management is about being aware of what type of stress you are vulnerable to, and developing the appropriate skills that you may need to improve your coping skills.

When Do you Seek Help?

One might recognize being over-stressed because of its physical symptoms (backaches, some gastric troubles etc) or emotional or social cues (being nasty, friends telling you to cool down etc.) or in any number of other ways.

In counselling, we help one recognize stressors, including one's own unhelpful thoughts and beliefs, and work with the client to improve their stress management capacity, including relaxation, time management, assertive communication and any number of other tools that may be helpful for them in their situation.
