Anger management counselling
Anger can often be a useful tool, but often it is disruptive and destructive, especially within intimate relationships and in professional contexts. Learning to manage one's anger is an important life skill. We work with anger management in individual and group formats.
We believe Anger is often a secondary emotion for something else deeper - hurt, sadness or unfulfilled needs. Often, it is the limited ability to express and have these needs met, or being able to accept unmet expectations that spills out into episodes of anger. In counselling, we work those having trouble with anger to understand their sources and triggers of anger, identify their own needs, rate & manage their anger, develop better problem-solving tecniques, respond to these needs in a non-aggressive way, and help clients learn calming and relaxation techniques.
We also explore approaches to repairing post anger, and working towards forgiveness and letting go.
Stress management counselling
Stress is not a bad thing by itself. In fact, if there was no stress at all, one would probably get bored and in the frustration that follows, seek out some challenges. We call the productive good stress "Eustress", though really when we say "Stress Management," we are talking about the Bad Stress, the kind that gets one blood pressure up, makes one feel miserable and doubting one's own capabilities.
One might recognize being over-stressed because of its physical symptoms (backaches, some gastric troubles etc) or emotional or social cues (being nasty, friends telling you to cool down etc.) or in any number of other ways.
In counselling, we help one recognize stressors, including one's own unhelpful thoughts and beliefs, and work with the client to improve their stress management capacity, including relaxation, time management, assertive communication and any number of other tools that may be helpful for them in their situation.
Grief counselling
The impact of any loss, whether it is expected and even more so if it is unexpected, can be quite overwhelming for the person going through it. Understanding the loss itself and how one grieves for the loss can be quite different from person to person. In many situations, the bereaved might find it difficult to adjust to the loss, and it might impact their ability to function in their everyday life, or be available for new/ other attachments. Sometimes, the impact of a loss may be felt many years down the line as well. Added to this are social messages of 'Be Strong' or 'Move On', which are often unproductive or harmful.
Counselling can be a safe space for a person to explore their loss, grieve for it and learn to cope with the loss and get back to the business of living.
Counselling for caregivers
In situations where one is in a care-giving role for extended periods of time, for people with chronic illnesses, people with long-term mental health issues, end-of-life carers and other such situations, while providing the physical, mental, emotional and even spiritual care can be rewarding in itself, it can also lead to burnout. In providing care, often it becomes difficult to care for oneself. This includes even being aware of the personal costs that go into being a care-giver, and in the process might find themselves resenting the person they care for, and in turn feel guilt over their own feelings. For some, the burden of caring may also mean personal losses of their own time, energy and wishes for themselves.
By taking the time to get themselves emotional support, caregivers can take better self-care and in turn be more available for the care of the persons under their charge.
Other counselling situations
We offer counselling support in a number of other specific counselling needs, including and not limited to: pre-marital counselling, pregnancy support, retrenchment support, separation/ divorce support, support for people living with the mentally ill, counselling support for those under psychiatric care for certain kinds of disorders, career management etc.
