Counselling is a process of growth, coming 'unstuck', dealing with difficulties and bottlenecks. Counselling is for anybody who is going through a difficult time in their lives. Most times, we are able to handle life's challenges on our own, but there are times when all of us could use a helping hand to get through a stressful situation.
Counselling is a warm, empathetic and active listening process, where the counsellor helps the client reflect upon their inner world (thoughts, feelings, behaviour, values, expectations etc.,) and their interactions with their social and professional context. It is also a gentle and gradual process, and usually not a quick-fix though of course, on occasion there may be the Aha! moment quite early on in the counselling relationship. Change as it occurs, is from within and fully from a conscious realization and choice, and so tends to be more rooted.
The counsellor provides a safe, confidential, non-judging and private space for one to explore themselves and their social/ professional context, get deeper insights and/ or make more empowered choices. There is no advice giving or force or judgement. The counsellor, from their experience and training, may offer techniques and tools that can help the client cope better, and it is the client's choice what and how they will adopt such learning. It is a completely voluntary process where the client continues to be fully responsible for their choices.
Counselling can be a one-on-one process of self-discovery, reflection and learning. It can also be a couple or group environment focused on inter-personal dynamics and relating patterns.
What counselling is NOT:
Counselling is not advice-giving, or religious preaching, or medication. It isn't mediation or negotiation between parties, nor is it a court to offer judgement on who is right or who is wrong. It does not offer financial or legal opinions, and not a networking place to meet others for business or social reasons. It isn't a coaching space to become better writers or other such needs. While some general outcome measures may be used, counselling isn't a place for psychometric assessments or diagnostics either.
While counselling is a supportive space, it is not an emotional crutch either. Counselling is an objective process aiming to empower people to live their own lives and does not encourage dependence.
When any client comes to InnerSight for a need that may be better addressed by psychiatrists, lawyers, mediators, doctors or other such professional needs, we will refer the client out and offer counselling support in the process.
