Too often when we want to motivate ourselves or others we focus on external (or 'Extrinsic') forces - rewards, punishment, pressure etc. But extrinsic motivators tend to become hygiene factors after a while, or worse, become de-motivators
How do you know you are not motivated
The opposites of motivation are really frustration or boredom. In some ways, motivation can be seen as a balancing act between the two - too easy and one gets bored, and too tough means one gets frustrated. Looking at your own situation, it really is a question of asking yourself if you are frustrated or bored.
Look for tell-tale signs that reflect your desire and drive to do what you want to do: Do you get excited about your work? Do you find yourself invested fully, or are you holding back? Do you seek diversions? At the extreme, you might find yourself feeling sad or despondent over the idea of the particular goal.
